Is Cologne for Men or Women?
QIs cologne for men or women?
October 13, 2026 · By ScentRanked

Short answer: Anyone can wear cologne. Technically, eau de cologne is just a light fragrance concentration, not a gender. In the US, "cologne" has become the everyday word for fragrances marketed to men, while "perfume" is used for women's, but scent itself has no gender.
Where the word comes from
Eau de Cologne ("water from Cologne") was a light citrus-herbal fragrance created in Cologne, Germany, in the early 1700s. Over time the name came to mean any light, refreshing fragrance.
Cologne vs perfume vs EDT
Bottles are labeled by concentration: eau de cologne (lightest), eau de toilette, eau de parfum, and parfum (strongest). Many "men's colognes" are actually eau de toilette or eau de parfum. See EDT vs EDP.
Can women wear men's cologne (and vice versa)?
Absolutely. Many fragrances are sold as unisex, and plenty of people wear scents marketed to the "other" side. Choose by what you enjoy smelling, not the label.
