Cologne questions, answered

All questions →

Real questions US shoppers search for, with straight answers.

What men's cologne gets the most compliments?

There's no scientific ranking, but sweet-fresh crowd-pleasers with good projection (Versace Eros, Bleu de Chanel, Le Male Le Parfum, Azzaro The Most Wanted) are the names most often recommended as compliment-getters.

Which is better, eau de toilette or eau de parfum?

Neither is better in quality. Eau de parfum is more concentrated and usually lasts longer and smells warmer; eau de toilette is lighter and fresher, which suits heat and the office.

Does cologne expire?

Cologne doesn't have a hard expiry date, but it slowly degrades. Stored away from heat, light and air, most bottles stay good for several years; a sour or 'off' opening means it has turned.

Is cologne for men or women?

Anyone can wear cologne. Technically 'eau de cologne' is just a light concentration; in the US the word is used for fragrances marketed to men, but scent has no gender.

Is Bleu de Chanel worth it?

For most men, yes: it's one of the most versatile designer scents, working at the office, on weekends and at dinner. If you want something unique or loud, look elsewhere.

Is Versace Eros for summer or winter?

Versace Eros is best in cool weather (fall, winter, spring evenings). Its sweet vanilla-tonka base can feel heavy in summer heat, though a light spray works on summer nights.

Why doesn't cologne last on me?

Usually it's dry skin, a light concentration (EDT/cologne), nose blindness, or fresh citrus notes that evaporate fast. Moisturize first, spray clothes lightly, or choose an EDP.

Can cologne go in a carry-on?

Yes, under TSA rules: bottles of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, inside your one quart-size liquids bag. Bigger bottles must go in checked luggage.

Should cologne be sprayed on clothes?

You can: fabric holds scent longer than skin. But skin lets the fragrance develop with body heat, and some fragrances can stain delicate fabrics, so many people do both lightly.

How should you apply cologne?

Spray 2–4 times on the chest or base of the neck from a few inches away, on clean moisturized skin, and don't rub your wrists together.

Should cologne be kept in the bathroom?

Ideally not. Heat and humidity swings from showers speed up breakdown. A cool, dark drawer or closet is better.

Should you wear cologne to work?

Yes, lightly. Choose a fresh, moderate scent and wear 1–3 sprays so people notice it only up close. Check whether your workplace has a fragrance-free policy.

How we pick

We focus on fragrances with long, well-documented reputations in the US and sort them by what you'll actually use them for: office, summer, date night, or getting noticed. We don't publish star ratings, scores or invented reviews. You get our honest opinion, the published notes, and who each scent suits. "Purchase Now" links go to the product page at Yoovic, and we may earn a commission (details).
